Try these checks if a website cannot hear you or use your camera. Save your work before restarting an app or device.
Check the basics
- Check the microphone mute switch, headset connection, and camera privacy shutter, if present.
- In the website or meeting’s settings, select the intended microphone, speaker, and camera.
- Close other apps that may be using the camera or microphone. Reload the website and try again.
Check Chrome permissions
- Open Chrome’s three-dot menu > Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings.
- Under Permissions, select Microphone or Camera.
- Check the affected website’s permission. Allow access only for the trusted site you intend to use. For a microphone, also check the selected input device.
- Reopen the website and test again.
If a control is managed or locked, contact IT. Do not remove district extensions or management profiles.
Check the computer’s permission
- Windows 11: Open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone or Camera. Check device access and access for desktop apps.
- Mac: Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone or Camera. Check that Google Chrome is allowed. Quit and reopen Chrome if prompted.
Google Chrome needs microphone permission in macOS as well as permission for the website.
Still not working?
Restart the device and test the same website. Students should ask their teacher. Staff should send IT the website, device serial number, exact message, and whether the issue affects one site or all sites. Do not install an audio driver or reinstall Chrome unless IT directs you.
