If an app or website is not working on your Mac, save any open work and try these checks. Stop when the problem is fixed.
Check the basics
- Make sure the device has power and is connected to Wi-Fi. Check any connected cables.
- For a Chrome problem, save your work, then reload the page using the circular-arrow button near the address bar. Try another website to see whether the problem affects one site or all sites.
Close and reopen the problem app
The red close button (X) closes a window, but may leave the app running. For troubleshooting, quit the app, then open it again.
- Click the problem app and press Command + Q. If Chrome asks you to hold the keys to quit, follow that prompt. Open the app again.
- If it will not quit, press Option + Command + Esc, select the app, and click Force Quit. Unsaved changes in that app may be lost.
Select the unresponsive app, then click Force Quit.
To restart: choose Apple menu > Restart. The Apple menu is at the top-left corner of the screen.
Ask for help
Students should tell their teacher. Staff can submit a Help Desk request with the app or website, exact error, and steps already tried. Include a screenshot if it helps, with private information hidden.
Find the serial number: choose Apple menu > About This Mac. Use the serial number, not the BSD asset sticker number.
